MotoAmerica Superbikes at Texas may have been the most exciting race weekend for BMW M 1000 RR riders this season. Sean Dylan Kelly (EasyHealthPlans.com/TopPro Racing Team) captured his very first Superbike win while Cameron Beaubier (Tytlers Cycle Racing) did everything he could to close the gap to the championship leader with two wins and one 2nd place finish out of the three Superbike races at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, TX.
Steel Commander Superbike Race 1 delivered a bit if everything for the fans – multiple lead swaps, technical hiccups, and some off-courses. Beaubier (No. 6 BMW M 1000 RR), Kelly (No. 40 BMW M 1000 RR) and Beach (No. 95 BMW M 1000 RR) pushed hard right from the start as they gave chase to the race leader from 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions respectively. On lap 2, Beaubier took over the lead. On Lap 4 however, Beaubier was forced into 3rd after an issue coming out of a corner. This meant that Kelly was in 2nd, trying to take the lead until an issue with his bike forced him to retire on lap 7. With two laps to go, Beaubier took over the race lead under braking and never looked back, capturing his first win and podium finish of the weekend. JD Beach finished in 5th and Danilo Lewis on his No. 94 Team Brazil BMW finished 9th.
Race 2 turned out to be pinnacle race for Sean Dylan Kelly and his BMW M 1000 Rr, which sported a special hand-painted livery thanks to kids from the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL. The battle for the top of the podium was on right from the start as there were two lead changes just in the first lap. Kelly (No. 40 BMW M 1000 RR) was in the lead at the start of lap 2 with Beaubier (No. 6 BMW M 1000 RR) giving chase. Neither rider was willing to give up anything to the other and there were four lead changes on the last lap alone. Sean Dylan Kelly finally took the lead on the last corner, giving him the race win, Beaubier a 2nd finish and JD Beach 9th place.
Race 3 continued to be a BMW M 1000 RR rider clinic, following a red flag restart. Kelly (No. 40 BMW M 1000 RR) and Beaubier (No. 6 BMW M 1000 RR) began their race, chasing the leader, from 2nd and 3rd. Beaubier swapped P1 with the leading rider several times throughout the race until the final lap, when he took over and extended his lead, finishing 1st for the second time during the weekend. Kelly claimed the 3rd and final podium spot, while Tytler’s Cycle Racing rider, JD Beach, finished in 7th.
2024 Championship Standings
With one round remaining, Cameron Beaubier moves into 2nd in season Superbike class standings with Sean Dylan Kelly moving up to 4th and JD Beach remains in 8th.
Danilo Lewis continues to lead the Superbike Championship Cup points race followed by Nolan Lamkin in 3rd, Alex Arango in 4th and Agustin Sierra in 8th.
After three rounds without Stock 1000 class races, Jayson Uribe remains in 2nd, just 7 points removed from the class championship. Danilo Lewis sits in 7th.
The final race weekend will be MotoAmerica Superbikes at New Jersey, Sept. 27-29.
